At the last conference of the Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS) in May 2014, Julian Whittam and Carole Delamour delivered a paper in French entitled « Museums and First Nations : between collaboration, transmission, and reappropriation. The Ilnu community of Mashteuiatsh and the National Museum of the American Indian ». The goal was to present the activities and the exchanges which took place between seven students from the Ilnu community of Mashteuiatsh and the National Museum of the American Indian.
This paper describes what these exchanges represent for the community and the museum as well as the mutual benefits which can emerge from these types of activities. It also includes broader reflection around ideas of cultural reappropriation and the important role that museum collections can play in transmitting and revitalising First Nation cultures in Quebec and beyond.
