We returned to Mashteuiatsh for the second annual meeting of the project.
A great community meal was organised for the occasion. Members of the band council of Mashteuiatsh as well as elders from the community were invited. Workshops were held by all three committees that had been created to carry out the work of the project: the documentation committee, the collections and exhibitions committee, and the committee on protocols, partnerships, and fundamental questions.
Participants in the meeting were able to visit the community’s Kassinu Mamu secondary school, situated in the former aboriginal residential school. Lorraine Moar, the school’s principal, explained how members of the community had reappropriated these spaces filled with unhappy memories, to turn them into a tool for empowering children by teaching them their language and culture.
