The master’s programme in museum studies at the Université de Montréal is a professional programme, with theoretical and practical components, jointly offered with the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM). Students registered in the programme come from a number of disciplines, including the humanities and social sciences, the arts, law, and education. The programme is also open to professionals in the field who wish to upgrade their university training.
The programme offers training in the area of museums and their sphere of activities, including museum management, and the development, conservation, and interpretation of collections. It includes both practical components, which are developed through a practicum allowing students to gain practical experience, and theoretical components, which culminate in a directed study paper. The courses aim to foster contact between students and the museum community by means of practical work, guest lectures, and museum visits.
Several of the project’s research assistants come from this programme.
