Dan Decontie was born in Kitigan Zibi, where he still lives today. He learned about the traditional ways as they were transmitted to him by his family, and especially by his father, Peter Decontie. He completed two certificate programmes at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC), one in intervention among native youth, and the other in preventing dependency among first nations’ youth. He is actively involved in the Community youth and prevention at Kitigan Zibi, a multidisciplinary programme for youth from 6 to 16 years of age, which helps them adapt to contemporary living and prepares them for their future role in society. Dan Decontie is also versed in artistic expression and in the traditional ways of the forest.
