Melissa Morris is a Montreal-based Colombian visual artist working with experimental video, video installation and documentary. She is interested in audiovisual mediation and her works investigate related questions such as the power of the means of representation and reproduction and the relationship between this power and the empathy or apathy of viewers. In her projects, the artist addresses the complex social issues present in communities and environments where marginalization and violence provoke collective reflection. Melissa sees art as a tool for social development and political action but also as a laboratory for collective experimentation. At home and abroad, her work is regularly presented at festivals and in exhibitions. A SSHRC grant recipient, she is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in film studies at the Université de Montréal, where she received a D.E.S.S. (specialized higher education diploma) in art, creation and technology.
She is creative director of the mechanical audiovisual production laboratory where she produced « Framestorming »; she has also been production director and associated curator for the Latin American media arts festival, « Experimenta Colombia ».
